All our indoor products are made of Finnish pine (pinus sylvestris) and finished with stain-resistant, water-repellent, matte wood oil (we use Osmo Color hardwax-oil 3062 matt).

Natural ageing

Pine will naturally change colour as it ages. Our products will start reacting with UV light very quickly once unboxed and start changing colour towards a beautiful honey tone.

Pine is a softwood and will naturally develop dents and scratches over time. We ask you to embrace and enjoy these characterful signs of ageing.

General cleaning

Always wipe the surface of your product clean and dry of liquids as soon as possible. Wipe your product regularly using a soft cloth dampened with a solution of water and neutral detergent. Keep chemical exposure to a minimum and avoid rubbing.

Stain removal

Remove stains using a soft cloth and neutral detergent. In case wiping with neutral detergent does not clean the surface, you can try to remove the stains using natural matte wood oil or wax. Use a clean cloth and apply the oil along the grain. Wipe any excess oil off.

Care

We at Vaarnii celebrate rather than hide the aging and natural characteristics of pine, and our indoor products do not necessarily require regular maintenance. However, to keep your product in the best possible condition, you can clean it gently with a fine abrasive sanding cloth once every 2 to 5 years (we recommend using 320-grit sanding cloth). Always sand along the grain. After sanding, treat the product with matte wood oil or wax. Let the oil impregnate for 10 minutes and wipe the rest off. Use a clean cloth along the grain to dry and polish the surface. You can also treat the product with matte wood oil or wax without sanding, but we recommend sanding because it cleans stains and small scratches and helps the oil or wax to absorb. 

All our outdoor products are made from Finnish, PEFC-certified Lunawood ThermoWood® Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris), sourced from sustainably managed forests. The ThermoWood® process uses only heat and steam. It enhances the wood’s properties throughout the material, improving its dimensional stability, durability and resistance to outdoor conditions. All Vaarnii outdoor furniture is also finished with a clear outdoor wood oil. The oil provides additional protection against moisture and dirt and helps minimise cracking caused by outdoor exposure.

We recommend cleaning and re-oiling your furniture once a year. In particularly exposed locations, more frequent care may be beneficial. Regular care helps reduce the risk of mould, minimise cracking and extend the furniture’s lifespan outdoors.

Natural ageing

It will reach its final colour after approximately two years outdoors. The rate of change will depend on the product’s location and exposure to sunlight and weather. Pine is a softwood and will naturally develop dents and scratches over time. We ask you to embrace and enjoy these characterful signs of ageing. Surface cracks are a natural characteristic of solid,  heat-treated pine and may appear over time as the wood responds to changing temperatures, moisture and outdoor conditions. They do not affect the furniture’s structural strength or intended use, but give each piece an increasingly distinctive character. Celebrating these imperfections is true to Vaarnii’s honest and unconventional approach to furniture making.

General cleaning

Brush away loose dirt and debris with a soft brush. Wash the furniture when necessary using water and a cleaning product intended for outdoor wooden furniture. Cleaning products intended for wooden patios and decking are also suitable. Always follow the cleaning product manufacturer’s instructions. Rinse the furniture thoroughly after washing and allow it to dry in well-ventilated conditions. A pressure washer may be used with care at low pressure and with a wide fan spray. Keep the nozzle moving and at a safe distance from the wood, and test first on an inconspicuous area. Avoid concentrated jets, as excessive pressure may roughen or damage the surface.

Stain removal

Remove stubborn stains or soil using a suitable outdoor wood cleaner and a scrubbing brush. Brush in the direction of the wood grain and avoid unnecessarily aggressive scrubbing. Test the cleaning product on a small, inconspicuous area before treating the entire surface. Rinse the furniture thoroughly after cleaning and allow it to dry completely.

Annual cleaning and re-oiling

1. Clean the furniture

Wash the furniture using a cleaning product intended for outdoor wooden furniture or wooden patios and decking. Follow the cleaning product manufacturer’s instructions and rinse the furniture thoroughly after washing. Allow the furniture to dry for at least 24 hours before applying oil. Drying may take longer in cool or humid conditions. Do not apply oil to damp wood.

2. Re-oil the furniture

Use a clear wood oil suitable for outdoor use and thermally modified wood. Always follow the oil manufacturer’s application, safety and drying instructions. We recommend applying the oil with a small roller and roller tray. Lightly load the roller and roll off the excess oil in the tray before applying it to the furniture. Apply a thin and even coat, using only as much oil as the wood appears to absorb. If the surface remains visibly wet, wipe away the excess with a clean, lint-free cloth. Allow the furniture to dry fully before use. Handle and dispose of oil-soaked cloths and application tools according to the oil manufacturer’s safety instructions.

Outdoor use and storage

The furniture is designed for outdoor use and can remain outside during the terrace season. However, prolonged contact with standing water or persistently damp surfaces should be avoided. Do not leave the furniture on grass, soil or other damp surfaces for extended periods. Whenever possible, place it on a surface that allows both the furniture and the ground beneath it to dry. For the longest possible lifespan, we recommend storing the furniture during the off-season in a dry, sheltered and well-ventilated space. If the furniture is left outdoors, avoid covering it in a way that traps moisture or prevents air from circulating around the wood.

Assembly

Once the furniture has been assembled, repeated disassembly and reassembly are not recommended. Repeated assembly may gradually reduce the holding strength of the connections.

Hans pendants are made from a combination of solid pine wood and pine veneer, and finished with a stain-resistant, water-repellent, matte wood oil (we use Osmo Color hardwax-oil 3062 matt).

Pine veneer is a very delicate material. Carefully wipe the dust off the veneer with a feather duster.

Bulb replacement

Use an E27 max 60W bulb. We recommend using a LED bulb with 3000k color temperature, as it works beautifully with pine veneer and lasts for many years. On top of this, LED bulbs consume a lot less energy than traditional halogen or incandescent light sources. 

Pine is a very characterful material. As a result of the naturally occurring oils and resins, pine will change colour as it ages. Heartwood and sapwood will start aging at a different speed resulting in gorgeous stripy patterns. The colour will gradually even out and mature to a beautiful honey tone over the course of years. Pine is also a soft wood and so will naturally suffer some dents and scratches over time.

In Vaarnii products the realities of aging have been embraced rather than ignored: Our designers have considered the texture that will come from small dents, scratches, and naturally occurring cracks, and our customers are asked to expect and embrace this beautifully irresolute texture.

How does pinewood react to extreme temperature and moisture changes?

Pine deals with humidity and varying temperatures well. However, it does react to changes in humidity by expanding as moisture increases and retracing when air gets drier.

Changes in humidity may cause cracks in the wood in some Vaarnii products that have the largest profiles, such as the 004 Coffee Table, 005 Lounge Chair, 006 AA Bench, and 006 AA Side Table. However, we have taken this into account in our designs and made sure the products will not lose their structural rigidity.

During the hottest summer months, our largest profiles may also secrete resin. This is influenced by gravity, so resin drops should become visible only on the underside of products.
