The warm glow of light filtering through pine veneer, combined with an unexpectedly graphic and elemental form, defines the enduring appeal of these iconic Scandinavian lighting designs by Hans-Agne Jakobsson.

When Vaarnii began exploring the use of pine wood in lighting design, it quickly became clear that the iconic designs of Hans-Agne Jakobsson from the 1960’s could not be bettered. Pine is used efficiently; it’s tone and grain are employed to maximum effect in designs that project material mass but boast actual lightness.

Vaarnii has re-engineered three of Jakobsson’s pendant designs using solid Finnish pine to support circular strips of high-quality pine veneer, reintroducing these classic 20th century designs to the market after decades of absence.

    Made in Finland.

Material: Scots Pine. Made from pine—a soft wood that evolves over time. The pine veneer will naturally deepen in colour as it ages, shifting from a pale tone to a rich, honeyed hue. Subtle variations and natural imperfections are part of the material’s charm and should be seen as signs of character, not flaws.

    Material Characteristics

Vaarnii uses the highest quality veneer in our lighting designs. It is thin, malleable and light, and features the same distinctive grain and colour as solid pine.

Our veneer is thick enough to hold shape, but fine enough to allow light to gently filter through. Because pine veneer is a thin section of solid pine timber it will age in the same way. Pine veneer will gradually darken in colour, from a pale tone to a rich honey hue. Because every light is handmade using natural materials, each is unique and subject to subtle variations in symmetry.

The Hans pendants include a copper support on the interior of the structure into which the light bulb sits. While each ceiling light comes with a powder-coated metal ceiling rose.
All Vaarnii products are made locally by select Finnish makers and specialists. Our pine veneer is currently sourced from outside Finland due to a lack of local high-quality materials.

Our supply of solid timber is sourced from sustainably managed Finnish forests and is hand-selected for the highest quality.

    The Designer

    Hans-Agne Jakobsson

Swedish designer Hans-Agne Jakobsson was a prolific creator of lighting design, producing hundreds of lamps and pendants during his long career. Jakobsson worked for a number of Scandinavian brands before establishing a manufacturing company in Sweden in order to produce and distribute his own work throughout the 1960’s and beyond. Although Jakobsson produced lighting in a variety of materials, it was his innovative designs made in pine veneer that quickly became modern icons and remain one of the most distinctive lighting icons of the last century.
